3 Tips For Choosing Your Wedding Photographer | Baltimore Wedding Photographer

Jan 18, 2017

I have seen so many wonderful new engagements on social media over the past few months! I even got to photograph a proposal right before Christmas on Federal Hill! It’s super popular to get engaged over the holiday season- you’re usually visiting family, the twinkling lights are totally magical, and what better way to start off the new year than getting engaged! Now that January is halfway through, many couples have started planning their wedding and photography is almost always at the top of the list. I have been getting lots of inquiries for 2017 AND 2018 weddings (read: it’s not too early to book!). As you’re searching for the perfect photographer to capture your engagement and wedding, I think it’s important to consider a few factors so here are my top three tips for choosing your wedding photographer!

1. Set a budget. This step must be completed before you go any further! Have you ever heard the saying, “good tattoos aren’t cheap and cheap tattoos aren’t good”? The same applies for photography. Photographers base their pricing on a multitude of factors- experience, equipment, business expenses (insurance, computers, software, etc), so take a moment to think if the person offering to shoot your wedding for the same amount as your monthly phone bill is running a legitimate business and has real experience as a primary wedding photographer.

2. Do your research on styles of photography. Are you into dark, moody, and super dramatic photographs? Do you like vivid and colorful images? How about an airy, light, and whimsical look? Make sure you take the time to figure out what you and your fiance enjoy! Photographers are artists as much as a painter is an artist, so styles differ!

3. And finally, what I think is the MOST important factor: your personalities! Take the time to meet with your photographer before you book with them. If you’re too far away to meet in person, I suggest a Skype or Facetime meeting. Keep in mind that you’ll spend your whole wedding day with your photographer and if your personalities don’t mesh then it’s going to add a bit of stress to your day! I almost always leave my consultations feeling like I just had coffee with my new best friend!
